ELKAP has been designed as a sustainable project right from the beginning:
- Socio-economic sustainability
- The benefits deriving from access to green energy and from the collateral works to improve infrastructure - to be implemented by the Katanga Province - will enhance the sustainable and inclusive economic growth of the area.
- The short, medium, and long-term impact of electrification will be impressive.
- Technical sustainability
- A modern, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure ensures affordable power production which in turn ensures equal access to modern, affordable, and sustainable energy supply for all social classes of the population.
- The presence of qualified local staff warrants regular and efficient maintenance of the plant.
- Financial sustainability
- ELKAP ASBL is managing the entire structure so as to ensure the viability of the investment.
- The affordability of the service fees will contribute to financial viability.
- Since access to electric power will create revenue by stimulating commercial activities, the local population will be able to pay for the consumed energy and therefore contribute to the future viability of the project.
- Administrative sustainability
- The local population is represented and actively participating in the making and implementation of decisions.
- ELKAP promotes local ownership by training local staff in operation and maintenance.
- Particular attention is paid to the accountability and education of the younger generation in view of a sustainable future development of the project and its results.
- Political and strategic sustainability
- ELKAP is in line with national and international policies, such as the Africa-EU Energy Partnership and the Millennium Development Goals; it also receives active support from the local and provincial governments.
- In the process ELKAP ASBL brings together a range of local and regional stakeholders from the governmental and administration side as well as from public services and the civil society, to act in concert to achieve their common goal.
- Environmental sustainability
- The allocation of renewable energy induces a reduction in the consumption of fossil combustibles. As a result, it contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants.
- The chosen type of a small hydro has no negative environmental impact whatsoever and does not affect local fauna.
